What's the difference between nylon and polyester carpet fibers?

Nylon and polyester are the two of the most popular synthetic carpet fibers, and people constantly ask our carpet store experts if one is better than the other. While both are good choices, it's going to come down to your needs and, of course, budget. So here's how we explain these two types of carpeting.

Nylon:  Able to withstand the heaviest foot traffic

Nylon accounts for over 50% of all residential rugs. It's ultra-durable and able to stand up to kids, pets, and anything that creates wear and tear. Nylon is also known for its resiliency, meaning that it retains its shape even after standing or another compression.

Other benefits include being static-free and low maintenance, with good stain resistance when a protectant is used. Nylon is versatile enough to be in many styles, including Berber, and hinders mold and mildew growth when kept clean and dry. It is slightly more expensive than other synthetics, but many feel the advantages outweigh the extra cost.

Polyester: superior inherent stain resistance

The polyester carpet fiber is not as resilient as nylon, but its stain resistance can't be beaten; it's a  hydrophobic, non-absorbent fiber, so stain resistance is inherent. It's also resistant to mold and mildew, and PET polyester is often recognized for its eco-friendly features, made from recycled plastic bottles. Nylon, however, is starting to catch up on recycling abilities.

We have a large selection of carpet styles, including loops, shags, textures, and cut-piles from some of the most recognized brands in the world, including Mohawk, Shaw, and others.  It's also important to remember that floor coverings often have different versions and quality levels, so, when comparing, be sure the rugs are of equivalent quality; otherwise, your analysis won’t be accurate.
